汚泥処理と有効利用

 排水処理においては、汚濁物質の除去に伴いその副産物が生じ、この副産物を汚泥といい、産業廃棄物の中で最大の割合を占めている。この汚泥の大部分は濃縮・脱水・焼却などにより減容化され、最後に残った灰分は埋立処分されている。今日、この汚泥からエネルギーの回収、堆肥、セメント原料、建設資材などへの有効利用が図られている。図1に汚泥処理と有効利用の概略を示す。

Sludge treatment and effective utilization

 In wastewater treatment, byproducts are generated along with the removal of pollutants, and these byproducts are called sludge, which accounts for the largest proportion of industrial waste. Most of this sludge is reduced in volume by concentration, dehydration, incineration, etc., and the last remaining ash is landfilled. Today, the sludge is being used effectively for energy recovery, compost, cement raw materials, construction materials, and the like. Figure 1 shows the outline of sludge treatment and effective utilization.
